Trivia
- This replay was played at Celtic Park with a 7:30pm kick off.
- Third Lanark had made a mad dash back from France where they had been playing Rouen in the Frienship Cup, losing 2-1 on the evening of the 9th, and had first been stuck in Orly airport and then in London because of B.E.A. flight staff industrial action. They had dashed into London and caught the train northwards arriving in Glasgow at 4:15pm. They went for a light meal at the Central Hotel before travelling on to Celtic Park.
- The organisers were determined that the game would reach a conclusion. If it was all level after 90 minutes then extra time would be played and if still no result then a second replay would be organised – but there would be ONE winner of the Cup and it would not be shared.
Review
Torrential rain immediately before kick off turned the pitch into a mud field with many pools of water and after 20 minutes the referee stopped the game so that a semblance of effort could be made to try and sweep the standing water pools away. Little progress was seen and after five minutes and three groundstaff the game was restarted.
Celtic's play was ernthusiastic and the tie was much better than the first game at Hampden. Indeed the Glasgow Herald correspondent felt that it was better than the 2 hour bore-fest of the European Cup Winners final between Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina played at Hampden the night before. Celtic went in leading 1-0 at half time and the standing water was attacked by an army of groundstaff.
Four minutes into the second half Billy Mcneill was assisted from the pitch and taken to hospital coughing blood after taking a heavy knock in the chest. celtic played on with 10 men for the rest of the game. Fletcher equalised for Thirds and on 75 minutes Haffey failed to cut out a cross and Gray gave Thirds the lead.
It should have been Thirds cup with 15 minutes to play but back came Celtic Hughes headed an equaliser on 77 minutes and a further 2 minutes later gallacher scored directly from a free kick.
