Trivia

  • Sean Fallon, Jock Stein and Dixie Deans turned out to watch Motherwell take on Hearts in the League on the Monday night. They played out a 2-2 draw.
  • With two draws immediately before the fitness of those returning was paramount. Brogan, Hay, McCluskey and new signing Andy Lynch all played in a Reserve game on the Tuesday night. They all joined the squad who were training at Seamills after the reserve game. Tommy Callaghan missed the game with a groin injury and Harry Hood dropped to the bench. In came Hay and Bobby Lennox.
  • The Fir Park pitch had been covered in snow on the Friday, but with thawing conditions and ground clearance the game went ahead and the game was played in brilliant sunshine.
  • This was Celtic's first away draw in the Scottish Cup since they played Hearts at Tynecastle on 5 March 1966, an incredible run of 17 ties coming out of the hat at home. This was an all-ticket match.
  • Hay's return galvanises Celtic and the game is done after 24 minutes.
  • Ally Hunter saved Peter Millar's penalty at 1-0.
  • Celtic announce after the game that Jock Stein will take a short holiday abroad.
  • Celtic bring out their new club song on record – 'Celtic your favourites in green'.
  • Celtic draw Aberdeen at home in the quarter finals.

Report

This was a different Celtic with no compromises.
Four goals came in the first half but the game really turned on when when Hunter made a spectacular save from Millar's penalty at 1-0. Kenny Dalglish hit the first goal and laid on two others before Bobby Lennox tied it up just before half time.
Hunter had a superb game and the media now rated him the best Celtic keeper since Ronnie Simpson.
