Review
Celtic crashed out to the Spaniards of Madrid but only after a game of controversy and regret on their part.
The regret was that they missed a glorious chance to go ahead in 5 minutes with a vital away goal when MacLeod won the ball in midfield and passed to Doyle. He then sent McCluskey clear on goal but with only the keeper to beat he shot meekly past.
In 18 minutes Latchford made a great save from Juanito and six minutes later did well to keep out a shot by Del Bosque. With Celtic looking comfortable disaster struck on the troke of half time. Latchford missed a Cunningham corner and with ball bobbing about, Santillana was able to hammer in a goal off a Celtic defender.
After half time Real put Celtic under intense pressure and Santillana headed another Cunningham corner aginst the bar with Roddy MacDonald heading clear before anyone could reach the rebound. In 56 minutes Real equalised. Cunningham crossed from the left for Juanito to head down and the German, Uli Stielike, hit a glorious drive low past Latchford.
Celtic now tried to take the game to their hosts and Real escaped a penalty claim when Benito handled in the box and the veteran captain Pirri was lucky not to put through his own goal from a pass back.
With seven minutes left Real grabbed the killer goal. Angel burst to the bye line and sent in a powerful cross for Juanito to haed in from close range.
