Glasgow Herald 8th October 1888
These teams played off their tie at Celtic Park, Parkhead. A fair number of spectators were present, and the game was hardly started when they headed the ball through. Two goals followed in rapid succession – one being headed and the other being scored through in a scrimmage at goal. From a corner the Celtic notched another point. The wind, however, was a helpful factor to the Celts, and this, perhaps, accousted to some extent for the rapidity of the scoring. but there was no doubt that the Parkhead team were playing a superior game, and fairly baffled their opponents in their attempts to score. the Shettleston played well, although seldom getting beyond the centre line. While the Shettleston were being pressed in front of goal, a swift shot was sent in by one of the Celts, which the goalkeeper partly checked, but it slipped through his hands. For the first time the visitors got up to the home teams goal, but the ball went over the bar. The Result at half-time was – Celtic, 8 goals; Shettleston, 0.
On change of ends the Celtic continued the game on the same lines, but in a modified manner. The Shettleston had a hard time of it, and did their best to score, but only managed two points, and at the finish the result was – Celtic, 11 goals; Shettleston, 2 goals.
