- Both teams had faced each other in the Scottish Cup final on 2nd Feb 1889: 3rd Lanark RV beat Glasgow rivals Celtic (making their Cup début) 2–1 in a replayed final. The original match was won 3–0 by 3rd Lanark RV but the SFA ordered a replay due to the playing conditions.
- So this game was a way to make up for that loss for Celtic, and was thus a draw for the crowd.
- Not the same teams who played in the Cup final, with 3rd Lanark missing 4 of their back division, and Celtic apparently not including 4 of their advertised 11.
- Celtic’s team includes two players who never played for the first team in competion games (Currie & Clifford).
- No League set-up yet.
- Two days earlier, Celtic won their first trophy: Glasgow North Eastern Cup
