At Celtic Park, before 8,000 spectators and in favourable weather. The Celts’ team was somewhat rearranged, McLaren being absent again. Sunderland were fully represented.
The play in the first half was fast and interesting, the Celts’ centre men showing fine manipulation.
At the interval the home men were leading by two goals to one.
Shortly after crossing over the visitors equalised, and the play, which had deteriorated somewhat, was about equally divided. Close on time the Celts claimed a goal headed from a corner, which was allowed, and they therefore ran out winners by three goals to two.

Fully 8,000 persons witnessed the return match between the Celtic and the Sunderland on Celtic Park, Parkhead. Sunderland came with a great reputation, being looked upon as the favourites for the English Cup. Nine of their team are Scotchmen.
The Celtic rearranged their eleven for the occasion, and upon the whole the experiment worked well, although there was undoubtedly a weakness on the left wing.
In the first half of the game there was some brilliant individual and combined play, but after change of ends the game deteriorated. The Celts won by three goals to two, but Sunderland should have equalised before the finish. Groves was the best forward on the field, and on present form has perhaps no equal as a centre in Scotland. Dowds was a great success at half-back, and will come in for honours this year. Kelly played as brilliantly as ever, and Gallagher tackled with great effect. McKeown was scarcely so steady as usual, but he has few equals as a left back, while Reynolds, his partner , is coming into prominence. Indeed he was seldom beaten on Saturday, while in McLaughlin the Parkhead men have a most reliable custodian.
The Sunderland forwards are all clever players. Harvey, the old Renton man, was the most conspicuous, but he was not well supported. J Campbell had some good runs, but the defence was too strong for him. Auld did not do much, and if Sunderland mean to win the English Cup their back division will have to be strengthened . Kirtley in goal is a very reliable man.
