Review
From a newspaper report from the time.
The Wanderers kicked off. Madden and McGhee at once led the attack, and passing to the left Campbell sent in a grand shot, which just grazed the cross-bar. Returning to the attack, the Celts crowded round Sutcliffe, and with a little more decision would have scored. The Wanderers' half-backs, esprcially Roberts, were playing a strong defensive game, at the same time feeding their forwards judiciously. The forwards, however, were making little headway, being well watched, and only once had the Celtic goal a narrow escape. From a trow-in the Celts had hard lines in not scoring. The ball was sent into goal, but Sutcliffe was playing in grand form, and on this and other occasions fairly frustrated the clever efforts of the Celts. One shot from Madden especially was saved in brilliant style. Dashing, determined passing brought the Wanderers' forwards dangerously near the Celtic goal, but Kelly rushing out saved capitally, and just as he was shaping for goal, Kelly again came to the rescue and saved. The Celts had the ball through the Wanderers' goal once, but the whistle had previously been blown for a foul. The first half was evenly contested upon the whole, although the Celts had far more chances at goal then their opponents. From a corner given to the Celtic, Maley tried a swift, low shot, without avail, and at half-time neither side had scored.
A few minutes after restarting, McMahon scored the first goal with a grand shot, which admitted of no dispute, although the Wanderers evidently thought differently. The cheering had hardly died away when the Celts scored again, but offside was claimed and given. The Celts were fairly hemming in their opponents, shooting at every opportunity, and the Wanderers had anything but an enviable time of it in defending their charge. Reynolds and McKeown, although the sun was in their faces, defended in their best style, never allowing the opposing forwards much chance. The second half was now being much better contested than the first, which was of a rather scrambling description almost throughout. for the Wanderers, Sutcliffe in goal played admirably, and saved his team from further disaster. He was ably supported by the backs. Towards the close, from a smart attack by Campbell and McMahon, the latter scored the second goal for the Celts. Sutcliffe's view was obscured by one of his own backs, and he could not have saved. A minute or two afterwards Campbell scored a third goal, but this was disallowed for offside. The Wanderers were now fairly beaten. They played a hard uphill game, but were clearly overmatched in the second half.
The result of a rather disappointing game was – Celtic, 2 goals; Wanderers, 0 goals
