Review
The Celtic had out their usual team, but Kelso lay out of the visiting owing to an accident. Trainer travelled from Sheffield to assist the professional team, who had thus their best eleven bar kelso. the attendance was a splendid one for a week night, over 5000 spectators being present. the Celtic lost the toss, and Dowds kicked off against the breeze. the North End were early forced back, and a smart fusilade by the home home left resulted in Mcmahon scoring with a splendid low shot. North End replied vigourously, and fine play by Ross Jun., and Gordon gave them a good chance, but the latter over-ran the ball at the goal-mouth. Hard play followed from both sides, Thomson, Drummond, Ross, and stewart being conspicuous for the North End, and Reynolds, Kelly, and the left pair for the Celts. The game was very fast, but the North End did not play with the same effect as on formwr visits to Glasgow, the principal weakness being in front. The right pair, Gordon and Ross, were very tricky at the start, but an injury to the former spoiled his effectiveness. the Celtic had the best of the exchanges, and their attack was well directed, but Ross and Drummond were in grand kicking form and spoiled their incursions repeatedly. the Celtic tried Trainer with some crooked shots, but he was equal to the calls made on him. North End got well down, and Drummond with a magnificent shot struck the crossbar. The celtic replied with a fine run up the left, but all they accrued was a corner, which Ross neutralised. Open play continued to half-time, when North End were still a goal down.
Crossing over, the Celtic repeated their opening display, but failed to score. the ball just grazing the posts. As a get-off Gordon broke away brilliantly on the right, but his parting shot was wide of the mark. The Celtic now attacked with great determination, their shooting being dead on, Trainer and Ross had a bad time of it. the Celtic peppered away, until at last they were successful. Dowds and McMahon between them being responsible for the goal. Two minutes later Dowds shot through, but was adjudged offside. The Celtic continued to have all the best of the play. Dowds raced well down, and, beating Holmes in the sprint, scored with a fine shot. A fourth followed from McMahon, and a hard game ended in a win for the Celtic by four goals to nothing. North End got off easily, as there were still fifteen minutes to play when play stopped.
