CELTIC V HEART OF MID-LOTHIAN – The visit of the renowned Parkhead eleven to play this holiday encounter with the Heart of Mid-Lothian attracted a very large crowd to Tynecastle Park. The weather was cold, though fortunately fair, and a capital display of football was the outcome of the meeting between the clubs. Neither eleven was at full strength. Madden and Maley being absentees on the visiting side, while Begbie did not turn out for the home team. In the first half the game was very evenly contested, but in the in the second portion the Celtic showed to greater advantage, and eventually retired victors by three goals to one. The home eleven scored, first. but the Celtic were not long in the minority, the fine play of M'Mahon, who occupied the centre position, soon placing the rivals on equal terms. The Tynecastle players wrought hard enough, but the defence was invariably too good for them, although on one or two occasions they had decidedly hard lines. The victors are a grand set of players. So no one begrudged them there success. M’Mahon’s trial in the centre was a great success, the old Edinburgh favourite playing a very fine game throughout. Campbell also played very well, although he did not seem very much at home in Mulvey's company, the latter being by no means a class player. The right wingers were less effective than usual, and at half Curran, reserve man, was the most dangerous, Kelly falling to get in much work. The backs and custodian were very safe throughout, The Heart of Mid-Lothian forward line was weak, Walker, Ellis, and M'Laren being good at times, with individual work. Scott was deliberately frightened for Curran, and Ross wandered about far too much. Baird did well at half, as also did Waterson, but G. Hogg was often beaten by M'Mahon. Adams and W.Hogg wrought hard and successfully, but Fairbairn did not save with his accustomed style and finish.
