ST MIRREN v CELTIC – These teams met for the first time this season in a League match at Westmarsh, Paisley. The attendance of spectators was the largest seen of the season. The Celtic kicked off, bu the Saints were the first to show to advantage, gaining an unsuccessful corner. The Irishmen retaliated and Campbell and McMahon had each a try at Patrick. From the goal kick the ground eleven again pressed Cullen, Bell missing an open goal by miraculous shooting. For a considerable time after this play centred in midfield, both teams putting in splendid work. M’Lean and Bell dribbled the leather the whole length of the field, Reynolds feebly returned, and Brown getting possession, sent in a swift shot, which Cullen saved at the expense of a corner. As the game proceeded, play became very exciting, the ground team confining their opponents to their own ground. From one of the Saints’ rushes, Bell, who hails from the Vale of Clyde, came into collision with Reynolds, and the latter player getting winded, play had to be stopped for a few minutes. When the game was again started the Saints for the first few minutes had the best of it, and after trying Cullen several times unsuccessfully, the Celtic front rank came away in a body, and Campbell passing swiftly into the goal-mouth, Blessington scored a splendid goal ten minutes from the cross-over. The Saints tried hard to get on level terms, but when the teams changed the score remained unaltered – Celtic one goal; St Mirren, nothing. The Celtic at the start of the second half had the best of matters, and for the first five minutes never allowed the Saints over mid-field. After the Westmarsh eleven had a try at Cullen, the Celtic again came away, and Cassidy, catching the leather in mid-field passed all opposition and sent in a swift shot which Patrick failed to stop. This second success roused the ground team who, from the centre kick pressed round Cullen, and Shaw, finding an opening, quickly scored, Retaliating, the home team again had the leather in front of Cullen, and with a little more luck might have equalised. Up to the call of time the play was fast and exciting, which ended – Celtic, two goals; St Mirren, one goal.
