The Scotsman – Monday, 20th November 1893, page 10
RANGERS v CELTIC – At Ibrox Park, before 12,000 spectators. The Celtic kicked off against a perfect hurricane. The opening passage was in favour of the Celts, who made a raid on Haddow, but the ball was sent behind. Then the Rangers had an innings. They could not beat Cullen, however. Aided by the wind, the Rangers pressed severely. The Celtic occasionally broke away. At the other end the defence of Doyle, Reynolds, and Cullen was superb. The Rangers had the hardest of lines, but the whistle sounded without either side gaining a point. After a prolonged interval the game was resumed, the Celtic now having the win at their back. The play opened with a sensational attack on the Celtic goal. For ten minutes the Rangers gave Cullen plenty of work, but the Celt performed well and kept his charge intact. Then the Celtic took up the running, but they seldom were dangerous. Playing against the wind, the Rangers’s defence seemed to improve. Their forwards play was also a great improvement, and combination was a feature of the game. In this the Rangers’ five excelled, and the run which terminated in McPherson scoring was a feat. The Celtic strove hard to equalise, but they were met at every point by their opponents. Just before the close they looked like scoring, but the ball went past. The Rangers nearly scored a second goal ere the whistle sounded. Result :- Rangers, one goal; Celtic, nothing.
