Scottish Cup – Semi-final round
Third Lanark v Celtic – Played at Cathkin Park. The weather was beautiful, and the spectators numbered 6000. The Celtic played their usual team. The Third were without Kirkwood, for whom Stevenson played. The Celtic started against the sun and wind, and at once began to press. They were in their opponents’ territory for some time. McMahon passed across, but it was not accepted. The Third came away with a series of rushes. The Celtic halves had to put in severe saving. Play for a spell was equal, but the Celts forged ahead and stretched the home defence to its utmost. The Volunteers had difficulty in getting rid of a corner. In twelve minutes Madden crossed, and McMahon scored. Play did not slacken any. The Third forced a corner but could not improve it. The Third were awarded a free kick 25 yards out, from which they ultimately scored. The Celtic backs perceptibly wavered immediately afterwards. Their forwards were in champion form, and raced up in rare style, but they found the defence tough. Cullen just saved his charge by scooping past, and the corner was not improved at the other end. McMahon was just beaten by Wilson, and the Celtic did not improve upon the corner conceded. Madden and Blessington put in a fine combined run. Madden’s flashing shot was saved, but the Celtic returned, and McMahon scored. The Third replied with a raid into Celtic territory. Reynolds saved a corner, and his punt was taken up by the right wing and carried up the whole length and spoiled by Madden. Just before the interval Wilson allowed a very soft goal to be put on by c’Mahon. It slipped through his fingers. At half time the score was – Celtic, three goals; Third Lanark, one goal. The Celtic were first to show ahead on the restart. A foul gave the Volunteers relief. They worked down and got over the Celtic lines. The Volunteers were doing much better than in the first half. In twelve minutes a shot from Blessington got through and counted, although a claim for offside was preferred. In fifteen minutes the Celtic rushed through another goal, but it was disallowed for playing the goal-keeper. The Volunteers came away grandly on the right, and successively beating their men they centred and Cullen was beat for a second time. From a corner kick Cassidy headed in and only saved when the ball was through and it counted. Blair gave Cullen a long shot to hold. He succeeded, but the Third returned to the attack, and caused the visiting defence to gather in a cluster round their goal. A corner was unprofitable, and then open play succeeded. Result – Celtic five goals; Third Lanark, three goals.
