1st March 1902 Inter-City League Celtic 5 Rangers 0
The Inter-City football league was founded in Scotland in 1899, ostensibly to increase the number of fixtures – and therefore bring in some extra income – for certain Scottish clubs.
The founder members of the Inter-City league were Celtic, Queen’s Park, Rangers and Third Lanark plus Hearts and Hibs (who also continued to play matches in the Edinburgh/East of Scotland League). In 1902, Dundee, Partick Thistle and St Mirren joined too and this remained the league set-up until it disbanded in 1904.
Naturally, fixtures between Celtic and Rangers were particularly appealing and on this day in 1902, at Celtic Park, the two Glasgow sides met in an Inter-City League clash. Unfortunately, the teams on the day are not available but when Celtic had played Hearts in a Scottish Cup quarter-final tie just ten days previously, the side which ran out at Parkhead was McFarlane, Watson, Battles, Loney, Russell, Orr, Livingstone, McDermott, Campbell, McMahon, Quinn. I should imagine the eleven against Rangers would not have differed much from that line-up, which had a very promising left-wing partnership of Sandy MacMahon and Jimmy Quinn.

Whatever the side, the players involved rose to the challenge, winning 5-0, keeping their momentum going for the Scottish Cup semi-final tie against St Mirren only two weeks away.
