Trivia
-
Scottish Cup Semi-finals
- Celtic were stuck for a goalkeeper and were lucky to secure Sunderland’s famous amateur, Leigh Richmond Roose, who, the previous Saturday, had played for Wales against Scotland at Kilmarnock.
- Roose had tended the goal for the Wales v Scotland International at Rugby Park the previous week in a match which led to Jimmy McMenemy being injured as a result of some nasty play by Welshman Llewellyn Davies.
- Thus when Celtic keeper Davy Adams was floored with pneumonia for the Scottish Cup semi against Clyde, it made perfect sense to secure the services of Leigh Roose as a form of compensation. Or possibly a convenient excuse to get him to Celtic for the gate receipts.
- Leigh Roose was a famous and socially pivotal player in the history of football.
- Apparently Leigh Roose ran the length of the pitch to congratulate and shake the hand of the Clyde player who had scored the third goal and ousted Celtic out of the Cup. We can only wonder how that might have been taken by some of the exasperated Celtic support at the match.
- This defeat was a rare blot on his record, but still an honour to have had him play at least once for Celtic.
- As well as Leigh Roose, Peter Johnstone also played in the same Celtic side this day. Both were to sadly die on the battlefield during World War One. RIP
- 26 Feb: No game for Celtic on 26 Feb because McNair, Loney, Hay, McMenemy and Quinn all at Blackburn playing for Scottish League 3 English League 2. No prizes for guessing who scored two of Scotland’s three goals!
