Scottish Cup – Second Round
The first game between these teams at Shawfield Park, Glasgow having resulted in a draw, they met again yesterday at Celtic Park, Glasgow. The weather conditions were not too favourable, a strong wind, accompanied by heavy showers, proving very troublesome to the players. Almost 40,000 spectators witnessed the play. Drawings – Gate, £870; stands, £280, total, £1,090.
In the first half Celtic had the advantage, playing with the elements in their favour. For fifteen minutes the contest was of an equal character, neither side being seen to advantage. Clyde were the first to settle down and Thompson with a pretty touch-line run brought them into prominence. Offside against Allan spoiled a good scoring chance. From the free kick Celtic made splendid progress and Young with a long shot severely tested McTurk.
After almost twenty five minutes play Gallagher opened the scoring. A shot from McAtee accidentally struck the inside player who cleverly turned it to account by sending the ball into the net. Clyde then attacked and Thompson, crossing accurately Corcoran made a great effort to reach the net. Shaw however saved brilliantly, but in doing so received a nasty head injury while Corcoran was also hurt. Both players however quickly recovered, Shaw, just in time to save from Mabberley.
Ten minutes from the interval Gallagher from a corner kick finely placed by Browning headed a second goal. Close on half-time the visiting inside forwards missed a great opportunity to score in front of an open goal, and Celtic crossed over leading 2-0.
In the second period Clyde made strenuous efforts to draw level. With the wind in their favour they were more in evidence, but, as in the previous forty-five minutes, their forwards disappointed at goal. A few minutes after the resumption a mis-kick by Dodds gave Clyde their first corner, but no advantage accrued. The subsequent play was without special feature.
The home team eased off towards the finish, but notwithstanding, Clyde failed to penetrate their defence. Shaw saved finely from Walker, Chalmers and Thompson.
The play throughout was conspicuously disappointing. Celtic were the better side in the first half, while Clyde were seen to most advantage in the second. Johnstone and Gallagher were outstanding for the winners, while McTurk and Chalmers were best for Clyde.
