Trivia

  • Before the match the German press fancied Hertha's chances after their performances against English and Irish cup-winners Burnley and Glentoran, but in the event they were magnanimous in defeat and admitted Celtic could have scored more but eased off and show-boated, putting on some exhibition stuff for the crowd when 4-0 up.
  • The Glasgow Herald of Thursday 28th May reports on Celtic thus: CELTS' FOREIGN TOUR. Continuing their tour on the Continent, the Celtic yesterday met the Berlin Hertha, at Berlin and defeated them by six goals to nothing. All of twenty six words to chronicle the League and Cup double winners' tour. The Glasgow Shipowners' Cup game between Clyde Shipping Co & Anchor Line was given the exact same word count!
  • Approaches have been made by agents of President Huerta of Mexico to see if General Funston of the American Army of Occupation would be favourable to receving the president if he flees the capital in the coming days.
  • For the sum of £285 you can buy a brand new 20 Horse Power Studebaker 4, 2-seater runabout.

German Newspaper Der Tag "The Day" on May 28, 1914:

Celtic beat Hertha 6:0 (half time 2-0).

On Wednesday (yesterday) evening a brilliant game was played out before about 3,000 spectators when multiple Scottish champions Celtic met Hertha in Berlin.

The Scottish team of professional players showed excellent skills, and tutored in the finest ball technology and interaction they played a game against which the Berlin players were almost powerless.

Although the Hertha defense had a good day and the goalkeeper Ladusch stopped some good shots, the Scots could have scored much more goals, if they had wanted to.

For several minutes they put on a dazzling display of interpassing without shooting as they tormented Hertha.

In the first half, only the center forward and the right-half scored a goal, but then the left-half added another two and after the break the center forward and the inside right with unstoppable shots made the final score 6-0.
