Trivia

  • Celtic & World War One
  • In this, Celtic's fourth game in nine days, even the presence of "The Obliterator" in the opposing ranks can't stop Patsy and the bhoys running riot.
  • Hearts with a game in hand still lead Celtic by three points at the top of the table while Rangers slip to fifth place after losing to Clyde.
  • The Glasgow Herald reports of a truce at the front and German soldiers playing 4-a-side football with the British troops. Falkirk soldier, Corporal Patrick Dea, of the 2nd Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders rather optimistically writes of his hope that this will be his last Christmas in the trenches.

The Scotsman, Monday 11 Jan, 1915
Fully 15,000 spectators witnessed the Celtic inflict a crushing defeat on Partick Thistle at Celtic Park, Glasgow.

The visitors opened in promising style, Whittle converting a cross from Branscombe three minutes after the start. The succeeding play was all in favour of the Celts, whose forwards played delightful football, but they were unable to get the better of Thistle’s strong defence.

Shortly before the interval the Celts secured the equaliser, Gallagher giving Campbell no chance from a pass by McColl.

In the second half the Celts were irresistible. The Jags’ defence collapsed, and goals came easily. Browning scored the second goal, and Dodds followed with a third from a free kick outside the penalty line. McColl notched the fourth and Gallagher had a fifth and sixth, thus completing his hat-trick.

The whole Celtic team gave a great display, with McMenemy and Gallagher outstanding. Campbell in goal for the Thistle could not be blamed for the heavy defeat, all the goals being of the unsaveable order. Adams played well at back, but the half-backs and forwards were below form.

The Glasgow Herald, Monday, 11th January, 1915
Three minutes after the start, as a result of a pretty forward run, Whittle scored for Partick Thistle. From that point until the finish Celtic took the game in hand.

Close on the interval Gallagher equalised and five minutes after the resumption Browning scored a second goal.

Throughout the home forwards were in resplendent form, more particularly in the second half, when no fewer than five goals were scored.
