Review

Celtic go to within touching distance of the championship title thanks to two goals from wing wizard Patsy Gallacher and a late free kick from Willie McStay. Even if Rangers won all of their remaining games in hand, a victory for Celtic in their final match of the season would seal the League Championship title.

Match report from The Scotsman, 18th April 1922

Celtic went a step nearer winning the League Championship when they defeated Partick Thistle at Celtic Park, Glasgow, by three goals. It was an interesting game throughout, and Celtic were well worthy their victory. Thistle started well, and for some time play ran on even lines, but Celtic were always the more deadly lot, and seven minutes from the interval Gallacher gave them the lead with a fast ground shot.

Immediately on resuming McFarlane missed a grand chance to equalise from a cross by Blair. After that Celtic took the game in hand, and Thistle rarely got in touch with Shaw. Gallacher scored a brilliant second goal, and near the finish McStay beat Campbell from a free kick. The Celtic forward play reached a high standard, but the work of the Thistle attack was very patchy, McColl and Kinloch being best.

The Glasgow Herald – Apr 18, 1922

In the early stages play ruled level, both goals being attacked in turn. The Celtic were first to settle, but though giving good display in the open they were seldom dangerous at goal. After 38 minutes Gallagher from a pass by Cassidy ran through to open the scoring and seven minutes after resuming for the second period he again netted following a brilliant run in the course of which the Celt beat several opponents including Campbell who had run out to meet him. Ten minutes from time Celtic added to their lead, McStay scoring from a free-kick. Celtic were the better team, and merited their victory.
