Match report from The Scotsman, 28th August 1922
[…] Rather a disappointing game was served up at Parkhead, Glasgow, when Celtic just managed to get the better of Hamilton Academicals. In the early stages Celtic were prominent as an attacking force, and the Hamilton goal had several narrow escapes. The visitors improved, and for a time play was very even. Wood, the Hamilton centre, had two good attempts to get the better of Shaw, the ball on each occasion going narrowly over the bar. Shortly after resuming McLean opened the scoring for the Celtic, and Cassidy followed with a second goal. Fifteen minutes from the finish Donald scored for the visitors from a cross by Cox. Crilly made his first league appearance for the Celtic, but he was rarely seen in the game, Johnstone, the visitors’ centre-half, keeping him well in hand.
The Glasgow Herald – Mon August 28
Celtic opened strongly, and were soon down towards the Hamilton goal. Gallagher was dispossessed but the attack was resumed, McLean and Cassidy figuring prominently. Celtic forced a corner which was cleared by Sommerville. McLean was next to test the goalkeeper with a hard drive. The home side maintained the pressure, but were unable to break down Hamilton’s fine defence. In the second half the visitors forced the play, but their shooting was erratic and Celtic were first to score. McLean netted five minutes from the resumption. Cassidy soon afterwards scored the second goal, and play continued in favour of the home side. After half an hours play the Academicals broke away, Cox crossing for Donald to head past Shaw. Play improved somewhat, but there was no further scoring.
