Match report from the Scotsman, 9th October 1922

CELTIC WIN BY DOUBTFUL “PENALTY”
A doubtful penalty kick awarded about ten minutes from the finish provided the Celtic with the points in the game against Partick Thistle at Parkhead, Glasgow. A heavy fog hung over the field, and it was with difficulty that the play was followed. It was a remarkably keen game throughout, and neither team could claim superiority for any length of time. The Thistle forwards at times were clever, with Blair and Kinloch the best wing on view. McFarlane scored early in the game for the Thistle, who looked like holding their lead, but Wilkinson in goal made two mistakes which cost his side two goals. McFarlane at left half scored the first from a free kick, and a minute later Gallacher added the second, after the goalkeeper had dropped the ball. Blair equalised for the Thistle with a great drive which completely deceived Shaw. Early in the second half Cassidy, following clever work from Murphy, beat Wilkinson from short range. Quite the best work of the afternoon resulted in Kinloch getting the equaliser, after he had tricked the entire Celtic defence. Gallacher scored the winning goal from a penalty kick. The attendance would be about 10,000.

Celtic’s Return

The week’s rest was not sufficient to restore to fitness Celtic’s injured players, and the champions had to face Partick Thistle without such well known players  as McStay, McAtee, and McLean. Partick Thistle were in similar plight, three regular players, Harris, Gibson, and McKechnie, being unavailable. In the circumstances the meeting of the clubs provided and interesting display that was un-looked-for and welcome, as after a quiet first 15 minutes, during which Celtic seemed to have the measure of their opponents, matters became lively when Partick Thistle opened the scoring, and a keen encounter for the points was afterwards witnessed. Celtic took the lead later, but the rivals peeled again at two points each and three goals each, and the points rather fortunately went to Celtic a few minutes from the finish, when Gallagher scored the fourth and winning goal from a penalty kick. Gallagher and Cassidy excelled for Celtic, but were equalled in skill and effectiveness by Partick Thistle’s right wing pair, Blair and Kinloch, and the form exhibited by the Partick outside right emphasised his title to a permanent place in the League side, and arrangement that could with advantage be carried out by giving McKechnie, his rival for the outside berth, a trial in the position of centre forward, which is at present vacant.
