Trivia

  • This tie which drew takings of £2,336 was played at Ibrox Park where the crowd was said to be swelled by Rangers' supporters who chose this game over their own match at Kirkcaldy, which had no attraction due to the big lead the Ibrox side had over their nearest rivals in the league (Falkirk). In the event Ranger's went down to Raith Rovers, beaten 2-0 before 10,000 at Stark's Park.

The game opened in sensational fashion, Cassidy scoring for Celtic in the first minute.

Motherwell responded vigorously, but their attack was of short duration, Celtic renewing the pressure.

Connelly sent in a hard drive, the ball going over the bar.

Motherwell got away, and Shaw had to clear from Ferguson. Celtic attacked again, Rundell being repeatedly tested.

Motherwell returned, and Stewart drove, Shaw clearing. Then the Parkhead side forced their way down, Gallagher missing narrowly.

The game continued on even lines both goals being attacked in turn.

Motherwell strove hard to get on equality, but the Celtic defence was very sound. Ferguson played a clever game but all his skill was to no avail. Reid made a good attempt to open Motherwell's account, but the ball went wide. For Celtic McLean had a similar miss.

Near the interval Shaw saved from Ferguson and Reid sent over.

In the second half play proceeded on even lines, Motherwell having as much of the game as their opponents. A series of free kicks to Motherwell yielded them no advantage. Latterly Celtic gained the ascendancy and J McStay tested Rundell.

A free kick awarded to Celtic just outside the penalty area was taken by McAtee, who succeeded in beating Rundell, the ball cannoning off an opponent into the net.

Fifteen minutes from the finish Celtic were awarded a penalty, Cassidy shooting over.
