Match report from The Scotsman, 25th September 1923

Without the services of McIntyre and Wright, Morton were no match for Celtic in the game at Parkhead, Glasgow, and were well beaten by three goals. For half an hour they put up a good fight, but the superior tactics of Celtic told their tale. Ten minutes from the interval, McLean, after beating Buchanan, got the ball nicely into goal, and Cassidy jumping up, headed into the net. Five minutes later McLean's good work led to another goal, McAtee driving the ball into the net from close range. Early in the second half Gourlay, who was Morton's outstanding defender, met with a leg injury, and was forced to retire for the remainder of the game. Thereafter play was never far away from Edwards, but the goalkeeper, with Buchanan and Allan, put up a great defence. Near the finish McLean was running in on goal, when he was brought down, and a penalty was awarded, from which W. McStay scored a third goal. The attendance would be 6000.
