Celtic Still Unbeaten

Celtic alone of the Glasgow clubs won their engagement, and their victory over Heart of Midlothian was obtained in unusual manner Twelve minutes from the close of a game in which neither side had gained nor was due advantage. Celtic were awarded a penalty kick, and Gallagher’s kick from the spot mark was saved by White, the visitor’s goalkeeper. The referee, however ordered the kick to be retaken on account of an infringement on the part of the Edinburgh players, and McLean who assayed the second attempt, shot over. A third attempt was allowed, and Wilson this time was adjudged to have scored with a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar and passed through the goal.

Celtic pressed strongly and were in front of goal when McGrory was charged over and a penalty was claimed but disallowed. Heart of Midlothian were afterwards seen to advantage but there was no scoring from either side before the interval. On restarting the visitors made an attack on Shaw’s goal, but it was unsuccessful. Near the finish Celtic were awarded a penalty kick. Twice the referee ordered the kick to be taken over again and at the third attempt Wilson beat White.

HOW CELTIC SCRAMBLED HOME

Celtic got both League points from Heart of Midlothian through a penalty goal, the kick for which was taken three times before the ball went into the net. Just before it was scored there were some lively times. Twice the Celtic appealed strongly for a penalty, and angry groups of players surrounded the referee demanding what that official said they were not entitled to. Then in a scrummage soon after the ball was driven against a defender’s arm, and Mr. Quinn at once pointed to the spot. Gallagher took the kick, and drove the ball softly at White, who saved, but as player had got over the line before the kick was taken the referee ordered another attempt. McLean then drove over the bar, and again the referee detected an infringement. Wilson now took the kick and scored. The rest of the game was quite interesting to the 16,000 spectators. The Hearts were often full of running, while the defence held out well when the Celtic were attacking. A draw would have been a fair reflex of play.
