Trivia
- The Glasgow Dental Hospital Cup was promoted by the Glasgow Football Association in 1928 to raise funds for the local dental hospital, which would open its doors for the first time in 1931. A nice cup was at stake, with gold medals for the winners.
The first time Celtic were involved was in 1928, when a fairly strong side ran out at Parkhead to face Queen’s Park.
About 4,000 turned up see John Thomson in his customary goalkeeping position and Jimmy McStay at centre-half, although by that time he was beginning to assume more of a ‘stopper’ role.
But there were also new boys, like Dan McColgan at right back, who had come in from Baillieston Juniors and outside-left Bob McWilliam, just arrived that summer from Denny Hibs.
It was another new boy, though, Joe Riley, a B.Sc. student at Glasgow University who got the first two goals – in the 7th and 30th minute – and an older star, Tommy McInally, who scored two more in the second half to give Celtic a 4-0 victory and a place in the second round against Partick Thistle.
Review
The first of the semi-final ties of the Cup competition being played in aid of the Glasgow Dental Hospital funds was contested at Hampden Park yesterday, when the attendance was returned as 3000.
When the regulation 90 minutes had been played with each side having scored a goal, an extra half-hour was started, but owing to darkness the game waas abandoned with nine minutes to go. In the first half of extra time Fraser gave Partick Thistle the lead, and subsequently Gibson added a third goal. The result is to stand, and the Firhill club will meet either Rangers of Clyde in the final. The match between the latter clubs will be played at Ibrox Park on Tuesday next.
As in the previous tie, so yesterday, the play seldom raised much enthusiasm, although there was some good football. play in the first half was evenly divided with Partick Thistle displaying the better combination.
Twelve minutes after the interval Ness headed the opening goal cleverly and it was deserved on play. There was little of note in the following play, apart from the equalising goal secured by McNally, who when he scored appeared to be well offside.
