Trivia

  • Celtic's forwards dominated with McGrory scoring two in the first five minutes of the game. Napier and Scarff added to the scoring. Ayr's Matt Morgan got one back from the penalty spot in 13 minutes with the score at 0-3 and Charlie McGillivray (who would later join Celtic) scored when the score was 1-5.
  • Heavy snow was widespread over Scotland and played havoc with the fixture list causing many minor games to be abandoned. The weather had a bearing on scoring and with the Motherwell v Partick game being called off Celtic’s big win over Ayr saw them go back to the top of the table.
  • English games were affected by the absence of top players who were playing for England in their match with Wales at Wrexham. Sunderland had a big win over local rivals Newcastle, with Scot Jimmy Connor getting two goals in a 5-0 win (Joe Devine played for Newcastle in this match and transferred to Sunderland after it). Scot, David Halliday, Manchester City’s new signing from Arsenal, scored two in City’s 3-0 win over Bolton Wanderers.
  • Leaders of The National Union of Railwaymen have stated emphatically that they will oppose the railway companies proposals for reductions in wages and salaries. In Scotland the reduction sought by the employers in wages amounts to 15% and the working day that was to be reduced to a seven and a half hour shift is to remain at eight hours. Mr C. T. Cramp general secretary of the NUR told members in Fleetwood, Lancashire, that the proposals attacking the working week would never be signed by him he said “I say if you agree to the proposals the companies have made railwaymen would become no more than slaves, and I would never be a party to it.”

CELTIC'S EASY WIN.

Still without the services of three "regulars" in McLeod, Tolland, and Brae, Ayr Untied slipped further into the, abyss in their game against. Celtic at Somerset Park, where, despite sleet and snow, fully 6,000 spectators assembled.

Celtic early put on the screw, and goals by McGrory (2), Napier, and Scarff before half time put them in an unassailable position. Ayr's reply to that in the first half was a penalty goal, scored by Morgan.

From a penalty in the second half Napier got a fifth goal and McGrory a sixth. In between, McGillivray, the home centre, scored a second goal for his side.

Although Ayr gave an improved display in one or two positions, notably at left back, where Fleming did well, they were no match for Celtic's clever forwards, whose play at times was a delight to witness, McGrory proved himself a great Ieader, while the halves gave the forwards all possible support.
