Trivia

  • Celtic's six goals were shared equally by Jimmy McGrory and Peter Scarff, Hamilton defender Willie Moffat scored from a penalty in 54 minutes when the score was 3-0.
  • Rangers and Celtic are now firmly established at the head of the table, with Kilmarnock and Motherwell next and then Hearts. All the members of the quintet were winners on Saturday. Rangers did not need to play like champions—and in fact, they never did—to account for Ayr United at Somerset Park. Celtic, playing at home had a runaway victory over Hamilton Academicals, Scarff contributing three of his club's six goals. Kilmarnock, besides keeping their place in the sun, accomplished the feat of checking Third Lanark's all-conquering career, and robbing the promoted Second Leaguers of the honour of being the only club with a 100 per cent record in the matter of points. Motherwell showed that they would be a force to be reckoned with beating Aberdeen by three clear goals.
  • The season in England opened with several surprises, chief of these being the defeat, at home, of Arsenal, First League champions, by West Bromwich Albion, Cupholders and promoted Second Division champions. Sheffield Wednesday, too, had a 6-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
  • A protest against the proposal to reduce teachers' salaries by 20 per cent is made in a manifesto issued by the National Union of Teachers and the Educational Institute of Scotland. The teachers, it is declared, are prepared to bear their due share of the national burden, but they demand to be dealt with as citizens only.
  • Mr Gandhi received a triumphal send-off when he sailed from Bombay to attend the Round Table Conference in London. He declared in a final interview before leaving that he would endeavour at the Conference to represent every interest that did not conflict with the interests of the "dumb millions."

CELTIC'S SIX GOALS

There was brilliant sunshine facing Celtic as they started the game, and for a few minutes this handicapped them, but soon they settled down to a splendid game, and harassed the visiting defence severely.

Thomson was occasionally called upon, but latterly McGrory put his side on the lead from a pass by Scarff.

Hamilton replied strongly, and Thomson saved from McLuckie and Wilson. The home team however, took command, and Scarff scored twice.

The Academicals resumed without McLuckie, and tea minutes after Moffat scored for them from a penalty.

Wright made many fine saves in the visitors' goal, and kept down a tall score.

Half-way through the second portion Scarff added the fourth and McGrory followed with another two.

The visitors' goalkeeper and backs were overworked, but put up a splendid defence.

Celtic moved very sweetly, their positional work being splendid. Scarff and McGrory each had three goals, and were a constant menace to the visitors' defence.
