Trivia

  • The Glasgow Herald reports: "Celtic beat the improved Ayr United side by 4-2 and in the process may have discovered an outside-left, McGhee, introduced there, scoring a couple of goals and otherwise acquitting himself creditably." Joseph "Joe" McGhee did not live up to the expectations of the Herald reporter and never added to the two goals he scored on his debut.
  • With Celtic leading by goals from McGhee and McGrory in six and nine minutes Ayr might have caved-in but instead fought back with a goal from centre-forward, Alexander Merrie, in twelve minutes. Celtic's new-boy then put the game out of reach with his second in eighteen minutes, and when inside-right Armory scored on 85 minutes, it was scant consolation.
  • Peter Scarff was taken off prematurely in a match v Ayr Utd, suffering from shortage of breath. Later in time he was diagnosed with tuberculosis.
  • Chicago, October 24:—"Scarface," Al Capone, the “king” of gangsters, who is generally believed to have been responsible for scores, of murders and wholesale terrorism in Chicago, has been sentenced to-eleven years' imprisonment for failing, to pay Income-tax on the fortune which he has amassed in his criminal activities. He has also been fined $50,000 (£10,000) and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution. Capone appeared stunned by the verdict, as he stood before the Judge watching intently while the sentence was being read. Capone walked up to his attorneys and shook hands with them, saying "I guess it's all over." After reading the sentence, the Judge announced that Capone would not be given time to wind up his business affairs, and ordered him to be taken to Leavenworth Penitentiary to-night.

CELTIC COMFORTABLE WINNERS

At Celtic Park, Glasgow, before 6,000 spectators, the Celtic early assumed a superiority over Ayr United, and McGhee scored after seven minutes' play taking advantage of a slip by Robertson.

Playing with great confidence, the home team bombarded the Ayr United goal, and went further ahead three minutes later, McGrory heading the ball through from a centre by R. Thomson.

The Ayr men made a strong effort to retaliate, and Merrie reduced the leeway three minutes later. The Celts, however, continued to attack, and McGhee scored their third goal after twenty minutes' play. Thereafter the home team settled down to some fine football and ought to have increased their lead on several occasions, but fine saving by Hepburn and indifferent shooting prevented them doing so.

The second half was only five minutes old when Napier scored the Celtic's fourth goal after clever dribbling. The Celtic were content with their lead, and did not worry themselves unduly.

Close on time Armory scored for Ayr United, but the result was by this time beyond doubt.
