Trivia

  • Mungo Munro opened the scoring for Clyde in 63 minutes then Murdoch added a second in 81 minutes. Charlie Napier's goal in 85 minutes was little consolation.
  • With McGrory injured Celtic once more experiment with a forward line of two-time debutant Bobby McWilliams at outside left, and Denis McCallum at outside right, but neither player sets the heather on fire
  • League leaders Motherwell's victims were Dundee United. Four of Motherwell’s goals were scored by Willie McFadyen, who is now within one goal of Jimmy McGrory's Scottish League record for individual scoring.
  • In the English League, Everton regained the leadership with a handsome win over Sheffield United. Arsenal jumped into second place with a victory over Blackpool.
  • The only performances of "Ruddigore" which the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company are staging during their three weeks season, in Glasgow King's Theatre were given on Saturday before large audiences. Of the performance perhaps the most notable contribution was that made by Mr Martyn Green as Robin. He conveyed delightful freshness and vitality to a decidedly pleasing part. All the principals were well cast, and in the “Picture Gallery" scene Mr Sydney Granville and Mr Darrell Fancourt were heard in good voice as the wicked Baron and the old Baron respectively. Miss Muriel Dickson made a successful appearance as Rose Maybud, and Marjorie Eyre again showed her fine qualities in character acting as Mad Margaret.

CLYDE'S FINE VICTORY

Fully 12,000 spectators were present at Shawfield Park, Glasgow, where Clyde scored a fine victory over Celtic.

It was a thrilling struggle from start to finish with victory going to the more enterprising side. Celtic had far more of the play than Clyde, particularly in the first half, but they never impressed at close quarters. The inside men and the half-backs worked well together, but the wing problems are still unsolved, neither McCallum or McWilliam being a success. It was the failure of these two to make the most of their chances that accounted to a great extent for the defeat of Celtic. Napier was the one forward who could shoot and he had several brilliant shots saved by Stevenson.

The Celtic backs were at fault when Clyde scored both their goals, being too eager to assist in attack and leaving their, goal open. Kennaway had several fine saves and could not in any way be blamed for the defeat.

Clyde's defence was brilliant throughout the game. Murdoch, who made only his second appearance in the side, proved a match winner, and Boyd and McGurk also did well.

There was no scoring in the first half, in which Celtic played fine football but failed to find a weak spot in the Clyde defence.

Immediately on resuming Clyde showed a big improvement in their play and after eighteen minutes clever work by Boyd and Murdoch ended in Munro sending the ball into the net. Celtic rallied strongly after this, but even with McCallum and Napier changing places they met with no better success and nine minutes from the end another strong attack by the Clyde forwards ended in Murdoch scoring a second goal.

Four minutes later Celtic were awarded a penalty for Summers handling and Napier scored from the spot, Stevenson touching the ball but failing to stay its progress into the net.
