Trivia

  • Frank O'Donnell is brought back into the team but is immediately injured, though fortunately for Celtic they did not have to rely on his services, as Charlie Napier with a hat-trick eased the pressure. McGrory and Alec Thomson weighed in with a brace each. Right-half William Clunas (ex-Sunderland) got Morton's only goal from the penalty spot.
  • In the Scottish First Division Hamilton Academicals are top of the table followed by Cowdenbeath, Celtic, and Rangers in that order.
  • A start was made, with football in England. Everton, the League champions, began with a defeat at West Bromwich, and the Cupholders, Newcastle United, drew at Bolton. The Arsenal opened with a victory at Birmingham. Both the newcomers to the First Division, Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, suffered defeats.
  • The Japanese Government has decided to send Admiral Nomuro, who commanded the Japanese Naval Squadron at Shanghai during the hostilities there, to the United States on a ''goodwill" mission. It is hoped that the Admiral's visit will remove all American "misapprehensions" concerning Japanese actions in Manchuria.

BIG SCORE BY CELTIC

There were 12,000 spectators at Celtic Park Glasgow, for the Celtic-Morton match.

Even against the sun and the wind the Celtic wore too strong for their opponents, and early tested Wilson, who made some, splendid saves.
The few raids made by the visiting side were easily disposed of by Cook and McGonagle.

O'Donnell, the Fife youth who came into the Parkhead side at inside-Ieft, got little opportunity to show his worth, as he was hurt in almost the first minute of the game. Later he went to outside-left.

Morton's defenders were sorely tried during the first half-hour and were fortunate on several occasions, but until Lyle retired injured just before half an hour's play, kept their goal intact.

Napier opened the home scoring a little later, and within four minutes Clunas equalised from a "penalty" awarded after the referee had consulted the linesmen. Three minutes afterwards, however, the Celts went ahead once more, Napier again being the scorer after receiving a pass from McGrory.

Wilson had no chance to save. Morton played pluckily on resuming without Lyle, but after eight minutes play R. Thomson put the home team further ahead, and three-minutes later McGrory went through to score the fourth goal.

A. Thomson, McGrory, and Napier added further goals, and by that time Morton were a well-beaten team. Their defence was quite unable to hold the confident Celtic forwards, who displayed their best form so far this season, even with O'Donnell practically a passenger for almost all the game.

The home defence was seldom tested after the first fifteen minutes, and the halves and forwards moved with great confidence. Although losing seven goals, Morton's defenders made a good show. Wilson was blameless and saved many fine shots in good style. The forwards were weak.
