Trivia

  • Jimmy McGrory scored in 13 minutes, but Celtic after dominating in the first-half were handicapped in the second when Peter Wilson was injured and Bob McPhail equalised in 61 minutes.
  • As well as the normal rivalries between the two Glasgow clubs there was added interest due to the fact that Rangers went into the game at the top of the league table by one point ahead of Celtic and three points clear of champions Motherwell. In the event Motherwell gained ground by beating Hamilton while the Old-Firm shared the points.
  • In the English League, Portsmouth, West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa all retained their unbeaten records but the last-named dropped a point to Liverpool. Only West Brom have won all of their matches and on Saturday beat Derby County 2-0 at the Hawthorns before 40,000 spectators. Newcastle beat Leicester at Filbert Street by 3-0 with the Scots, Jimmy Boyd, (2); and Tommy Lang getting the goals.
  • Mr de Valera spoke at Kilkenny on the land annuities problem, restating the attitude he had previously taken up towards the British Government. GLASGOW RIVALS DRAW

The first meeting of the season of the Glasgow rivals attracted an attendance at Parkhead of almost 45,000.

Celtic had McGillivray at outside right again, and F. O'Donnell, the young Fifer, at outside left. Rangers experimented with McDonald at left back.

The home men struck their game almost at once, and fully deserved their goal when McGrory scored from a neat pass by McGillivray twelve minutes after the start. Rangers made strenuous efforts to get, level, and the play was of a high standard.

Celtic continued to impress, and ought to have increased their lead, but careless finishing plus strong opposition prevented them doing so. English missed a rare opportunity to square matters just before the interval.

Rangers went, very strongly on resuming, and an injury to Wilson handicapped the home side, particularly as he had been playing magnificent football previously.

After 16 minutes' play McPhail scored for Rangers, and with Wilson evidently suffering great pain and removing to outside right, the Ibrox team's chances of victory looked exceedingly bright. Play, however, slackened off, owing to the earlier exertions, but as the end grow near both sides made strenuous efforts to got the lead, a last-minute spurt by Celtic almost coming off.

The game was fast and almost without any incident to mar the pleasure of the crowd. The Celtic defence was first-rate, McGonagle excelling, and Wilson, until his injury, was the best half on view.

A. Thomson and McGillivray were Celtic's best forwards, although McGrory showed improvement.

Gray was Rangers' best back, and Brown their outstanding middleman. English was clever but not so certain near goal, McPhail was a great worker, and Archibald marvellously sure in his crossing.
