Trivia

  • Goals from the star man Charlie Napier, Alec Thomson and Jimmy McGrory were enough to see off Clyde who scored through centre-forward Billy Boyd.
  • Rangers were trounced 5-0 by English Cup Winners Newcastle in the return leg of a Cup-Winners competition that saw the English club win 6-4 on aggregate after last week’s 4-1 victory for the Ibrox men. Ex-Ranger, John James Murray and Jack Allen scored in the first half and Allen, Harry McMenemy (son of Celtic legend Jimmy), and Murray scored again in the second half. Leading on goal aggregate by three, Rangers were confident of winning the contest but the Magpie's had other ideas.
  • The British Boxing Board of Control yesterday decided to withhold Jim Maharg’s share of the purse in his British fly-weight championship match at Manchester with England's Jackie Brown. An inquiry is to be held into the circumstances of the Scottish boxer's alleged fouling of Brown, which ended in the eighth round with the declaration by the referee, that Maharg was disqualified for hitting low. Maharg said:—“The crowd never gave me a break. Brown knocked down my body punches, and his shorts were much too high, I am sure I can beat Brown. So far as I can make out, I had taken him out of his usual style. At the time that the bout was stopped I think I was in a strong position."
  • Mr Gandhi, who has been confined in Yeravda Prison, Poona, since January 3 yesterday began at noon his self-imposed fast, which, he avers, he will continue "unto death" unless the British Government's plan for limited separate electorates for the "depressed" classes (or "untouchables") is withdrawn. The 63-years-old Indian Nationalist leader declined the conditional release offered him by the Government, and will fulfil his vow in his cell. Referring to his vow, he said he counted his life as of no consequence. "A hundred such lives given for this noble cause would, in my opinion, be poor penance done by Hindus for the atrocious wrong heaped on helpless men and women of their own faith," he declared.

Celtic v Clyde GC rep 1932In the replayed Glasgow Cup-tie at Celtic Park last night Celtic passed into the second round of the competition by defeating Clyde rather easily by three goals to one.

Put briefly it was only a real contest for about an hour. In the closing thirty minutes Celtic were clearly on top, and the manner in which Clyde were entirely outplayed during that period would be a disappointment to those who anticipated a much closer struggle.
