Trivia

  • Chic Geatons went on a mazy run before unleashing a 25-yard drive into the back of the net, and with the scores tied at 2-2 John Gilmour slices a clearance into his own net to give Celtic victory. Davie Balfour equalised twice for Dundee who went from the sublime to the ridiculous, gifting Celtic the points and they must have regretted getting on the Dundee bus to come to Parkhead.
  • League leaders Rangers dropped a point at Hampden and this allowed Celtic to come within one point of their rivals. Celtic have, however, played two more games than the leaders.
  • In the English First Division leaders Arsenal had a good win in their local derby against Chelsea at Highbury, and in a Second Division London derby between Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage the game ended in a draw. The combined total attendance at these two matches was 104,000. The 60,000 at Highbury got best value for money as Alec James was in one of his brilliant moods in his team’s 4-1 win. The record crowd at Craven Cottage watched a 2-2 draw.
  • A bomb went off outside the ballroom of the British Embassy in Cairo, residence of Sir Percy Loraine, H.M. High Commissioner for Egypt and the Sudan. Ten thousand British troops are stationed in the garrison in Egypt.

CELTIC BEAT DUNDEE

Celtic managed to defeat Dundee at Parkhead for the first time for several seasons, but they had to fight hard for the points. They were the superior side, but they found the visitors defence hard to circumvent.

The heavy ground did not assist the play, and may have been responsible for the bad shooting. Dundee showed up well at the start, and were unfortunate in having a goal disallowed.

Celtic improved later, and took control. In all but shooting their efforts were splendid, many fine openings being squandered.

The home side went ahead on resuming, O'Donnell cleverly passing back to McGrory to open the scoring. The second goal for Celtic was the result of a splendid effort by Geatons, who worked his way upfield, beating several opponents before driving into the net from 25 yards.

Dundee had previously drawn level with a fine run by Balfour who drew Kennaway out before netting. The visitors centre again equalised with a first time effort, which completely deceived the Parkhead defenders.

The Celtic reply was of the desperate order, and, as they forced their way through the visitors' defence Gilmour miskicked in attempting to clear and put the ball into his own net.

Near the end Balfour was almost through, but Kennaway came out to meet him and saved the situation.

Celtic v Dundee Dec 1932

Their first bad break was when that goal was disallowed, which occurred after 30 minutes' play, and when neither side had scored. Troup then shot the ball into the Celtic goalkeeper's hands, and while he was in possession Balfour charged Kennaway into the net. For some obscure reason the referee gave a foul against Dundee. [N.B. At this time and for many years after, until the 1950s, players could charge the keeper with their shoulders and this was a much-used way of scoring. So there must have been an infringement other than the charge, which was legitimate.]
