By Liam Kelly 19 April, 2023 No Comments
On this day in 1933, an East v West football match took place at Tynecastle. It was a match held to raise funds for the Granton Trawler Disaster Fund. 12,000 people were in attendance. The East team was comprised of Hibs and Hearts players, while the West team was made up of Celtic and Rangers stars. The Glasgow combined XI won 3-2.
The standard of play was high and 11 internationals were involved. The Celtic players chosen to represent the West were Kennaway, McGonagle, McStay, Geatons, Thomson and McGrory.
The East went 1-0 up after 15 minutes, but McPhail (Rangers) soon equalised. However, East pushed to restore their lead and got their wish before half time.
After the break the Celtic and Rangers select came out flying. McPhail grabbed his second of the game, before Celtic’s McStay scored the winner from a rebounded free kick.
McGrory, McPhail and Fleming were outlined as star performers – all for the West XI.
Full time: Hearts & Hibs (wearing Hearts tops) 2-3 Celtic & Rangers (wearing Hoops)
A total of £503 was raised.
