Trivia

  • Charlie Napier opened the scoring for Celtic in the 50th minute and ten minutes later Johnny Crum made it 0-2. Thirds had chances and before Hasson pulled a goal back to make it 1-2, Joe Breslin should have scored. Crum got his second and Celtic's third before Jimmy McGrory put the issue beyond doubt in the last minute.
  • Press reports suggest that the left-wing of Napier and Connor may be a success.
  • There were no other league games in Scotland last evening (Wednesday) but Hibernian beat Leith Athletic 4-1 at Easter Road in the East of Scotland Shield before a crowd of 6,000 and in the Dewar Shield at Ochilview Stenhousemuir were beaten by St Johnstone 4-2 before a crowd of 3,000.
  • In England four First Division matches resulted in the following scores: Birmingham, 0; Manchester City, 1; Derby County, 1; Everton, 1; Liverpool, 1; Stoke City, 1, and Sunderland, 0; Portsmouth, 2. Sam English, (ex-Rangers) scored for Liverpool and Septimus Rutherford got both Portsmouth goals.
  • The Viceroy of India, Lord Willingdon in a speech to the Indian Legislature in Simla justified the bombing expeditions carried out recently in the North West Frontier as being necessary to defeat the menace of terrorism, which because of the air actions was now well in hand. The villages bombed had harboured agitators and were inaccessible because of the recent floods that had destroyed bridges so conventional operations were impractical he said.

GLASGOW CUP

CELTIC BEAT THIRD LANARK.

THIRD LANARK, 1; CELTIC, 4.

Celtic took a long time to get properly going against Third Lanark in the Glasgow Cup-tie at Cathkin Park last night, and though they won easily enough in the end, they did not reveal the craft and poise one associates with a Celtic side. Nevertheless, the side as it is presently constituted, with Buchan and Crum paired, on the right, and Napier and Connor on the left, seems worth persevering with.

Third Lanark, in a goalless first half, played with fine confidence and skill. The forwards had the Celtic defenders in difficulties more than once and with a little repose and judgment in taking up position would have scored.

Despite the many assaults by the Cathkin forwards, Kennaway was seldom perturbed. On the other, hand, the Parkhead forwards, although combining poorly, were much more likely scorers.

Had not McGrory been below standard Celtic might have scored earlier. They got their first goal five minutes alter the restart when Carabine was on injured. Napier was the marksman. After outwitting two of three men he was faced by Robb, but calmly gave the defender the "dummy" and slipped the ball into the net.

Carabine returned and went to outside-left and several other changes were made. The side, as a result, was disorganised. Crum scored a second ten minutes later. Celtic were awarded a penalty-kick soon afterwards, but from the spot, McGonagle placed the ball past a post.

Third Lanark reduced the leeway through Hasson, but four minutes from the finish Crum scored a third goal for Celtic, and just on time McGrory registered a fourth.

The attendance would be about 12,000.
