HIBERNIANS ALMOST HOLD THE CELTIC
The Celtic-Hibernian, encounter at Parkhead proved to be an exceptionally good game in which the home team only won by the odd goal in three, securing the winning-goal five minutes from the end in a typical Celtic finish. Prior to that, the Celtic had been hard pressed, and only forward failings on the part of the Edinburgh side gave the home men the opportunities which led to victory.
The half-back and inside forward play was particularly good, and, no one did better than Moffat at inside-left for the Hibernians. The visitors were again without Watson, Halligan and Flucker, besides replacing Somerville at outside left by McKinven.
The Celtic relied upon the side which drew, with Motherwell, except that they included McGrory at outside-left, his original position, in which, however, he did not impress, although at the start, when the Celtic had a swirling wind behind them, he got plenty of opportunities.
The Hibernian defence held out so well against repeated attacks that it was only a smartly taken snap goal by Crum that was scored, against them in the first half and the equaliser came immediately on the resumption, when Moffat drove in a splendid shot from 30 yards.
In the succeeding play, with the Easter Road middle trio staving off the Celtic pressure, the Hibernians had many good chances, but only Walls was on the mark, and just before the end the Celtic launched their final attack and Crum rushed the ball through.
But the Hibernians would not have been grudged a point. Nearly all did well, with Moffat, Macfarlane, and Wilkinson outstanding.
F. O'Donnell and Thomson, the inside wing forwards, and Hogg, right back, were the best of the home men, who were somewhat below recent form, while the Hibernians were very much improved.
