Trivia

  • Eight minutes into the match the head of Jimmy McGrory puts Celtic in front, but their lead was short-lived as Alec Venters equalised on 13 minutes. Eleven minutes into the second-half Bob McPhail put Rangers in front only for Peter McGonagle to equalise on the hour with a 25-yard shot from a free-kick.
  • In a good game in which Peter Wilson was crippled and played as a passenger for an hour Celtic did well to draw.
  • One of the chief results of the New Year's Day football in Scotland was that Motherwell strengthened their grip on the League leadership. With four reserves in their team and two men injured during the match, they scored a sound if narrow win over Hamilton Academicals at Motherwell. Rangers, meantime, were conceding a point to Celtic at Parkhead, and are now six points behind the leaders, though they have played two fewer games.
  • In England Arsenal and Huddersfield Town who head the First Division did not play and this allowed Derby County, with a first-minute goal by the Scot Dally Duncan in a 3-0 victory over Everton, to gain ground on the leaders.
  • The number of unemployed persons on the registers of Employment Exchanges in Great Britain at December 18 last was 2,224,079. This was 55,938 less than the number on the registers at November 20, 1933, and 499,208 less than a year before. There was an increase of 3,342 in the Scottish unemployment figures.

"OLD FIRM" DRAW IN GREAT GAME

Rangers were at full strength for the great New Year's Day match with Celtic at Parkhead, but the latter had McDonald at outside left. He gave a fine account of himself. Celtic pressed from the start, and forced three corners in the opening minutes.

Rangers were not permitted to settle, and in consequence the ball was kept flashing about at great speed. In eight minutes McGrory, with a characteristic leap, scored for Celtic. Thereafter the game became even keener. Rangers equalised through Venters five minutes later.

Celts, playing above themselves, might have gone ahead if O'Donnell had exhibited better marksmanship. Forced on the defensive, they remained cool and confident, Rangers being unable to add to their score.

By degrees the penetrative Celtic attack was forced back in the second half, and Rangers harassed their defence. Kennaway distinguished himself by saving splendidly from McPhail, but the latter, was able, a few minutes later, to put Rangers ahead after Meiklejohn had placed a free kick into the goalmouth.

McGonagle equalised for Celtic by driving a free kick into Jenkins's net from twenty-five yards in splendid style. Celts made desperate efforts to go ahead, but Ranger's defence was sound, and a great game, played in sporting fashion, ended in a draw.

The game must rank as one of the best played between the teams in recent years, and the result was a fair indication of the play. Neither side carried any passengers, although the pace told on several players. Under the circumstances, it would be unwise to single out any player, every man pulling his weight, and playing in clean, and sportsmanlike manner.

The attendance was 40,000. Celtic v Rangers Jan 1934
