Trivia

  • Celtic are undone by an old-bhoy, John McMenemy, the son of one of their all-time greats James McMenemy. John scored the only goal of the game, a drive from 18-yards, in 58 minutes.
  • Rangers kept on their winning way at the expense of other challengers for the League flag when they defeated the Heart of Midlothian by two goals to one at Ibrox Park, Glasgow, last night. After 3 games played Celtic are in 9th place on 3 points.
  • England were beaten by 562 runs at the Oval in the "fight-to-a-finish” 5th Test Match at Kennington Oval. The victory gave Australia success in the rubber by two victories to one, and now, in the, whole series of Tests between the two countries, Australia lead by 52 wins as against England's 51.
  • Sentencing three members of the Bridgeton Derry Boys gang to 4-months imprisonment with hard labour Sheriff Haldane warned against the molestation of witnesses, when it was found that a witness in the trial, Mary McGoldrick, who had previously given evidence against the Billy Boys gang, was unable to walk the streets of Glasgow for fear of her life. The case against the three had been that they formed a mob; that they had brandished a bayonet, while rioting in Reid Street, and other streets in Bridgeton. Charges against the men of having wilfully broken 21 glass window panes of the Sacred Heart school were found not-proven by the jury.

ONE GOAL VICTORY

MOTHERWELL DEFEAT CELTIC

KENNAWAY' S GOOD FORM

OVER 20,000 spectators saw Motherwell beat Celtic by the only goal in a thrilling match at Fir Park.

Play for the most part favoured Motherwell. In the first half Kennaway had grand saves from each of the home forwards, but he was lucky on three occasions when shots beat him and struck the woodwork.

During this period Celtic's forwards, if not so prominent as the home forwards, raided well, and were often dangerous. Ellis in particular had his work cut out to watch Delaney. The line, however, was weakened by an injury to McGrory, who went to outside left.

Motherwell continued to have the better of play after the interval, and in a quarter of an hour McMenemy scored a fine goal.

Kennaway and his backs were in top form, and saved Celtic from a heavy defeat. The goalkeeper received an ovation at the end of the match.

In a Celtic rally McGrory and O'Donnell had fine shots saved by McClory. The defence and Delaney were best for Celtic, and Blair and McMenemy were outstanding in a strong Motherwell team.
