Trivia

  • Goalkeepers Joe Kennaway and Wilson "Bill" Marsh were the stars of the show, saving brilliantly from Scott Symon and Willie Dunn respectively. Played on a local holiday Monday to attract a big crowd, this match achieved its aim in terms of crowd numbers, but not goal numbers.
  • The idea of playing football on the Autumn Holiday Monday was also adopted by Fife teams Raith Rovers and Dunfermline, the visitors to Stark's Park, Kirkcaldy, yesterday afternoon in the first round of the Wemyss Cup, providing a holiday attraction for about, 2,000 spectators. After a hard fought and entertaining game the home side prevailed winning 4-3.
  • Although there are still nine weeks left of the Flat Racing season it is assured that the Aga Khan will be the top racehorse owner in Britain. His horse “Theft” is well-fancied at 2 to 1 on to win the Buckingham Stakes in the opening day of the Newmarket meeting today.
  • “Gambling on the Lord's Day is deplorable, and must be stopped," remarked Bailie Brown at Glasgow Northern Police Court yesterday, when imposing a fine of £1 each on twelve men who pleaded guilty to engaging in gaming in Craigbank Street on the previous afternoon. The Magistrate also imposed a fine of £10 on Carmino Jaconelli, who pleaded guilty to a charge of having the care and management of premises at 11 Caithness Street which were used as a betting house. Six men who were found on the premises during a police raid were each fined £1, with the option of 10 days' imprisonment.
  • Madrid, October 1.—The Spanish Government resigned to-night. The Government's resignation was preceded by a fierce attack upon them by Senior Gil Robles, the Catholic leader, in the Cortes. After hearing his speech the Ministers retired, amid an atmosphere of growing tension, to deliberate upon the position. Later it was announced that they had resigned. The Government has only been in office since March. A feeling of imminent crisis prevails in Spain. During recent weeks there have been frequent allegations of the smuggling of arms by the Government's opponents—both Socialists and Fascists.

CELTIC DRAW AT DUNDEE

DEFENCES PREVAIL

DUNDEE, 0; CELTIC, 0.

Dundee and Celtic brought forward their Scottish League fixture to coincide with the autumn holiday in Dundee yesterday. It was a profitable change; the match being attended by about 17,000 spectators.

Celtic started against a fairly strong westerly wind and attacked briskly, but the game was not long in progress when it was apparent that defence on both sides was to be better than attack.

Dundee's best try in the first half came from Coats who was unlucky with a first time shot only inches too high. Weak passing by the inside forwards spoiled many promising Dundee movements.

In the second half Celtic played more accurately than Dundee, but their finishing, like Dundee's, left much to be desired.

Kennaway made a superb save from Symon and Marsh had a grand clearance from McDonald. The goalkeepers were the outstanding men in the game, and a division of the points fairly reflected the run of play.
