Trivia

  • Jimmy McGrory's headed goal in 8 minutes and Hugh O'Donnell's shot from close in had Celtic 2 up at the break. In 56 minutes ex-Buckie Thistle centre Sandy MacLennan scored after a long run to bring the Jags back into the game, but only for six minutes before Willie Buchan got in on the scoring, slotting home a rebounding McGrory header from the crossbar.
  • Four Scottish League First Division matches were played, and the results included home wins for the Celtic, Dundee, and Queen of the South. Hugh O'Donnell scores his sixth goal against Partick this season and the only away victory was secured by Kilmarnock. Partick Thistle suffered their first League defeat this year, and Kilmarnock had their first victory in the competition since they beat the Rangers at Ibrox on December 15.
  • In England; Grimsby, at home, lost their first League game since last December to Derby County. County showed marked superiority in attack and Hughie Gallacher, the ex-Chelsea centre got all three goals for Derby in a 15 minute spell either side of half time. The home side rallied when Jimmy Dyson scored and then Derby’s goal had narrow escapes, but the 16,000 spectators had no doubt about the merits of Derby's 1-3 victory.
  • A storm of wind and rain brought severe flooding to Clydesdale and England during the weekend. The steamer Staghound ran aground at Ayr Harbour without loss of life.

PARTICK THISTLE AGAIN DEFEATED BY CELTIC

The Celtic and Partick Thistle met for the fourth time when they opposed each other in a League game at Parkhead, Glasgow. The Celtic were victorious in the first League game at Firhill, and after a draw in the Cup competition the Parkhead team were again winners by 3 goals to 1. The home team won easily.

There was some fine football seen, and most of it came from the Celtic, who started well, and after McGrory had nodded the ball into the net from a lob by Hogg in eight minutes they never looked back. The Celtic goal came as the result of a badly placed pass from Ballantyne, which allowed Hogg to go on and send a high ball in McGrory's direction.

The home forwards, well supported from behind by Napier and McDonald, were full of running, and Donnelly and Cumming and the other defenders were kept busy foiling the eager McGrory and company.

From a good pass by Regan, Miller had a chance to score, but his finishing effort, although strong enough, was well off the mark.

After 16 minutes, O'Donnell increased the Celtic's lead by beating Johnstone from close range after some smart play by McDonald.

The Thistle forwards were only in evidence in spasmodic raids, and Regan was well held by Morrison, who was deputising for McGonagle.
On the resumption, McGrory went through from the kick-off to shoot strongly, but Johnstone cleared confidently.

The visitors were often seen in attack the second half, but their finishing was weak. McLennan, however, took advantage of a mistake by McDonald to travel half the length of the field before beating Kennaway to reduce the leeway.

The Thistle showed signs of making a fight for the points, but a goal by Buchan put the result beyond doubt.

The Thistle's halves could not compare with the home trio, of whom Napier was best. Cumming and Morrison did well at back, and McGrory and Bain were the best forwards.
