- Celtic secured their first victory of the season at the expense of Hamilton Academicals by a single goal. A 20-yard shot from James McGrory in 78 minutes beats Accies keeper, Jimmy Morgan, giving the bhoys two points, which puts them into fourteenth place in the league. Ex-Celt Jimmy McStay catches the journalist's eye for his performance at his old home ground.
- With the English League still to start the main focus of sport is the 5th Test Match between England and South Africa at The Oval. The visitors won the 1st Test and lead the 5-match series 1-0 with this, the last Test, looking like being another draw.
- Scottish cricket was marred by rain on Saturday, and in only a few instances was it found possible to carry out fixtures. Perthshire brought their County Championship programme to a conclusion when they defeated West Lothian County. West Lothian were all out for 68, and at one stage J. S. Symon, Perthshire, took three wickets in nine overs for 8 runs. J. Farquhar took seven wickets for 37 for Forfarshire, who defeated Clackmannan County.
- The tripartite conference on the Italo-Abyssinian dispute broke down with Mussolini unable to accept anything the delegates Britain or France put forward as compromises to Italy’s demand for protector status over Abyssinia.
- The Cunard-White Star liner Laurentic (18,724 tons) and the Blue Star cargo/passenger vessel Napier Star (10,116 tons) collided in fog near the Skerries in the Irish Sea causing the deaths of 6 crewmen.

CELTIC'S NARROW VICTORY
Hamilton Academicals were first visitors of the season at Celtic Park, Glasgow.
The weather was rather unsettled, and that no doubt was responsible for only 5000 being present at the start. McStay, paying his first visit to Parkhead as a Hamilton player, was early prominent with a timely intervention, and a nice pass let Wilson through to deliver a good shot which Kennaway did well to hold. Celtic attacked strongly, and Crum was brought down inside the area. After consulting both linesmen, the referee awarded a penalty kick, but Morgan stopped Patterson’s effort and cleared strongly.
Hamilton Academicals took a new lease of life, and Kennaway was kept busy saving shots from Wilson, Harrison, and King. McDonald was prominent with some fine leading-out work but the inside left was rather inclined to overdo fancy work, and spoiled many likely openings.
With half an hour to go the visitors lost Wallace who had to leave the field after a collision with Crum. McLaren dropped back to fill the gap, and while the defence was not weakened, the attack lacked punch, except for spasmodic bursts by Wilson and Gilmour in the last fifteen minutes, Buchan, who had been quietly effective all through the game crossed accurately to McGrory, and the centre, beating McStay, drove the ball past Morgan from twenty yards to give Celtic the lead.
The Academicals made a final effort, and Harrison sent in a header, which appeared certain to count, but Kennaway threw himself across the goal, and turned the ball round the post for a corner. It was a truly great save.
McStay was outstanding, with McGonagle, Lyon, Wilson, McDonald and Harrison best of the others.
The attendance was about 20,000.
