THIRD LANARK JUST BEATEN

DISPUTED GOAL PUTS CELTIC INTO GLASGOW CUP FINAL

Celtic have qualified for the Glasgow Cup final, which will be decided on Saturday.

In the semi-final replay with Third Lanark at Cathkin Park yesterday, they won through by a goal scored by Crum five minutes before the interval. The Third Lanark players hotly disputed the legitimacy of this award, claiming that Crum was off-side when he received the ball from McGrory. The referee consulted both linesmen before adhering to his original decision.

Though it must be admitted that Celtic deserved their victory on the power and confidence they revealed in the first half, they were decidedly fortunate to hold out during the closing half-hour, when the Cathkin forwards threw all their resources into a courageous bid to equalise.

The indecision and hesitancy of Gallacher and Kennedy, however, robbed the home team of a possible draw. Even so, Blair made one magnificent effort in the closing minutes, when his drive from fully thirty yards struck the cross-bar with Kennaway beaten.

The feature of the match was the splendid exhibition of Lyon and Denmark, who dominated in defence. This was Lyon's best game for Celtic since leaving Queen's Park. In construction, too, he excelled, although he suffered in comparison with the generalship of Denmark, who repeatedly foiled the indefatigable McGrory.

Behind the tall Denmark, Carabine, and Harvey caught the eye. Muir, like Kennaway, made no mistakes. Time and again he came out and turned aside dangerous looking crosses from Delaney and Buchan. He was not troubled, however, by McGonagle, who played at outside left. McGonagle made no impression in this position.

McInnes was injured in the first half, and was off when Celtic scored the vital goal. He returned immediately afterwards.

Delaney was also hurt, but was able to resume after receiving attention.

Howe never gave up in his endeavour to save the game, and shortly before the finish struck a post low down. But even when Third Lanark were at their best, they did not reach the standard of Celtic who, however, must do better at Ibrox on Saturday if they hope to overcome Rangers.

It was thought that the venue would be Hampden Park, but the directors of the two clubs agreed to take the game to Ibrox.

The official attendance was 18,000, and the receipts £600.
