RANGERS' SECOND-HALF RALLY
CELTIC DEFEATED IN GLASGOW CUP FINAL
Rangers recaptured the Glasgow Cup by a second-half display which completely outpointed Celtic at Ibrox.
It was a curious transformation, for up to the interval Celtic seemed capable of challenging their opponents right to the finish.
The fact of Rangers having a strengthening breeze behind them in the second half could not alone explain their domination. The real explanation was the tactics adopted by Fiddes and Venters, who were not content merely to play a forward game, but went after Geatons and Paterson, the Celtic wing half-backs, when they had the ball.
Another factor was the subjection of McGrory by Simpson. The Celtic centre has seldom had such a poor match, but he got little help from his colleagues, although Delaney and Buchan played a good first half as a wing.
It was a convincing win and might easily have been more emphatic. Rangers' first goal, scored by Fiddes 20 minutes after the restart, was overdue. Gillick scored a second goal five minutes later direct from a corner kick, and nearly repeated the feat twice afterwards.
The official attendance was 50,000
The slackness in the Rangers attack may best be described by saying that Geatons was in Celtic's goal for 10 minutes and did not get a shot to save.
For 20 minutes the Celtic defenders held out, and then a shot from Fiddes rebounded from the inside of the post, and the referee, in a good position to see what happened, awarded a goal.
