AIRDRIE GIVE CELTIC A FRIGHT

LEAGUE LEADERS WIN AFTER BEING TWO DOWN

Eight thousand spectators witnessed a thrilling game at Broomfield Park, Airdrie, when Celtic defeated Airdrieonians. It was unfortunate for Airdrieonians that the visitors, after an indifferent first half, struck brilliant form in the closing half-hour. Two goals down, they fought back in the best Parkhead tradition wiped out the deficit within a matter of three minutes, and followed up by securing the winning goal 15 minutes from the end.

The game was full of thrilling incidents from first to last. Airdrieonians opened the scoring with only four minutes gone, Connor improving on a cross from Mooney. Law added a second goal 20 minutes later, and again it was Mooney who provided the opening. Celtic made a great bid to reduce the leeway, but were met by a resolute Airdrieonian defence, in which Shaw and Murray excelled. The grim fight was continued for 15 minutes after the interval, but Celtic gradually wore down the home side. Hawthorn saved in spectacular fashion on several occasions, but had ultimately to admit defeat from Crum following a corner-kick. Immediately afterwards McGrory levelled the score. Celtic maintained the pressure, and after many narrow escapes the home goal again fell to McGrory.

Hawthorn, Shaw, Murray and Law were outstanding in a plucky Airdrieonian team. Celtic’s superiority really lay in their halfback line, where Geatons was particularly outstanding. Forward. Murphy gave a very good display, while McGrory and Crum carried the real burden of the attack. . The entire line, however moved with precision, and responded well to the intelligent forcing of their half-backs.
