McGRORY'S GREAT FEAT
THREE GOALS IN THREE MINUTES
The outstanding feature of the game between Celtic and Motherwell at Parkhead was the performance of McGrory, who scored three goals between the 18th and 21st minutes of the second half. The Celtic leader thoroughly earned the great ovation accorded him as he returned to his place.
The game produced some good football, and, if Celtic were the better performers, there was no denying the ability of their opponents Celtic took some time to settle, owing to the keen tackling of the visiting half-backs, and consequently play was fairly even during the first quarter of an hour. Celtic then began to apply severe pressure, Crum, McGrory and Murphy testing McGrory. After 21 minutes' play, Delaney dashed past several opponents, to secure the first goal for the home side and, despite a splendid rally by Motherwell Buchan put Celtic further ahead five minutes later.
McGillivray and Stewart deputising for the transferred Ogilvie and Ferrier, made some inspiring rallies, but the home defence was sound, and Kennaway was seldom called upon. After a short spell of Motherwell pressure Celtic attacked again, Crum and Buchan missing by inches. Hogg was limping when the game was resumed after the interval, but the balance of the home team was little impaired.
Motherwell were fortunate in not falling further behind when Murphy missed an easy chance, and then came McGrory's great effort. His first goal was scored following a run and pass from Delaney; he headed another from a cross from Murphy; and a similar movement gave him his third. That completely subdued Motherwell, who never appeared capable of replying to the confident work of their opponents.
