CELTIC TRIUMPH IN GLASGOW CUP TIE

THIRD LANARK BEATEN, 3-l

Although there was an element of luck about the manner in which Celtic recorded their three goals against Third Lanark in the Glasgow Cup first-round tie at Cathkin Park, Glasgow, last night, there is no doubt they were worthy of their success. They showed greater confidence, their half-backs always holding a connecting link, and their inside forwards were virile and enterprising.

Once again the poor marksmanship of the Third Lanark forwards was exposed. Only Morrison who received a severe shoulder injury late in the game, but pluckily carried onto the finish and Hay, can escape criticism. The others were indecisive, lacked guile in creating scoring opportunities and were invariably brushed aside and foiled before they could get in a shot.

In the rear, however, the Cathkin team compared favourably with their rivals, Carabine excelling. Denmark, however, was responsible for the loss of two of the goals. In the thirteenth minute, he attempted to pass back to his goalkeeper Hall, was short, and saw Delaney dash in and score an unexpected goal.

Three minutes later, Murphy outstripped Carabine and centred. Denmark, in endeavouring to head clear, put the ball through his own goal.

There were many, who were under the impression that Crum scored this goal, but though he carried the ball into the back of the net the ball was over the line from Denmark before the Celtic forward connected.

Third Lanark reduced the leeway, five minutes before the interval. Kennedy sent a long oblique pass to Howe, who side-stepped Hogg and delivered a fast, swerving ball, which Foley did well to touch out. It travelled to Hay, however, and the centre-forward smartly netted.

The third goal for Celtic was registered in the eighth minute of the second half. From about ten yards inside his own half of the field, Hogg drove a high ball for goal. Crum went careering in to meet it in the air and Hall, in the anxiety of the moment and evidently blinded by the sum, allowed the ball to pass him.

Despite a gallant fight back, Third Lanark were unable to wipe out the deficit.

The official attendance was 22,248, and the receipts, including stand, £858.
