Trivia
- As the English and Scottish champions met Jimmy McGrory returned from a long lay-off through injury with two brilliant goals, and Jimmy Delaney added the third and winning goal for Celtic.
- Renfrew-born Scottish International Jimmy Connor missed a spot-kick for the Wearsiders, but young inside-right Russell (ex-Edinburgh Juvenile) and Sunderland stalwart Bobby Gurney did score. Also in the Sunderland team were Scots, Alex Hastings from Falkirk, Alex Hall (ex-Dunfermline), and Patrick Gallagher.
- Both goalkeepers, Joe Kennoway and Johnny Mapson replaced predecessors who lost their life as a result of incidents on the football field. John Thomson died as a result of a freak accident while Mapson replaced Jimmy Thorpe who died as a result of injuries sustained in a particularly violent game against Chelsea only months before this friendly. Deaths in football were not unusual at this time.

CELTIC BEAT SUNDERLAND
MEETING OF SCOTTISH AND ENGLISH LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
A crowd of 20,000 saw Celtic and Sunderland, the Scottish and English League Champions, serve up a fine display at Celtic Park last night.
Both team exhibited many fine touches, and Sunderland were perhaps a shade unfortunate to lose by three goals to two.
Had they made the most of a penalty kick that came their way they would at least have shared the honours. Connor, who took the kick, saw Kennaway save his drive, and clear at the second attempt.
Celtic were handicapped by an injury to Miller, their centre-half, who was forced to change places in the second half with Paterson.
A feature of the game was the splendid shooting of Russell, the Sunderland inside forward, who went to the Roker Park club from an Edinburgh juvenile team three years ago.
McGrory, (2); and Delaney were the Celtic marksmen, and Russell and Gurney scored for Sunderland.
