HAMILTON'S DRAW IN BRIGHT ENCOUNTER
Hamilton Academicals sprung a surprise on Celtic when they served up a fine display and earned a hard-won point. The visitors were just a shade fortunate at the finish, as in the last half minute McDonald headed a goal, which the referee nullified as offside. It appeared to the spectators that the ball was last played by an opponent.
The football all through was high class, and over the piece, the visitors justly earned a division of the spoils. Their forwards were seen to more advantage than Celtic's attack In McNee the Academicals possessed the best winger. Hogg had not a moment's peace with this youngster, who beat the back often, and never shirked a tackle.
The visitors went ahead in four minutes, Gardiner seizing on a ball which both Lyon and Wilson had missed, and slipping it smartly past Kennaway. Four minutes later Delaney gave McDonald a pass which the latter was not slow to accept, and the scores were levelled. Within a minute Celts were leading, Carruth smartly hooking a Hogg freekick past Morgan. Hamilton drew level when Kennaway only partially cleared a McNee corner, and King, fastening on, drove hard into the net from well out.
The second half started in much the same way as the first, Celtic went ahead in three minutes through Delaney. The ball was centred and Hamilton pressed down on Kennaway, and King drove into the net from 15 yards, and the teams were level again.
Play raged from end to end, but gradually Celts got on top and had some real bad luck. Duffy, McDonald, and Crum all struck the cross-bar with shots. Against that, however, Wilson was twice foiled by Kennaway when he seemed certain to score.
The Hamilton backs were very sound, with Jarvie a class wing half-back. Wilson was a grand leader, and McNee and King were good raiders. For Celts. Duffy, Lyon, Carruth, and McDonald did well The attendance was 12,000.
