CELTIC IN LUCK

STENHOUSEMUIR ON TOP AT LARBERT

It is not overstating the case to say that Celtic were very lucky in living to fight another day. Stenhousemuir rose to the occasion in magnificent style, and, in the second half especially, had their more fancied opponents outplayed to an extent hardly thought possible.

The home side faced a strong wind in the first half, and earned plenty of defensive honours during the initial visiting onslaughts In the seventeenth minute Kennaway had the first taste of the opposition power, when McNair sent in a fierce shot which the Parkhead goalkeeper reached and no more, the ball striking the inside of the upright to come back into play. Celtic tried desperately hard to establish a first half lead, but were baulked, time and again, by a sturdy pair of backs and a sound trio of intermediate men.

In the second half the "Warriors" called the tune, but it was Celtic who scored first, McGrory counting in a scramble following a corner. The visiting jubilation was short-lived, for Howie, who had previously squandered two likely openings, left Kennaway helpless with a powerful angular shot from a pass by Dempsey.

In the end Celtic were fighting all they knew to prevent themselves being dismissed from the competition.
