CELTIC GO DOWN

KENNAWAY PREVENTS A BIGGER DEFEAT

Playing their best game this season so far, Kilmarnock defeated Celtic by two goals to one at Rugby Park.

A fast pace was maintained all through, and the closeness of the result held the interest of the spectators till the end.

On the run of play, Kilmarnock were full value for their victory, and, but for some weak finishing and excellent work by Kennaway in the Celtic goal, the margin in their favour would have been larger. Twice the Celtic goalkeeper saved brilliantly with one hand when a goal seemed certain.

Kilmarnock's half-backs laid the foundation of their success by the hold they had on the Celtic inside forwards, and they, also found time to assist their own front line. The defence, too, was sound, with Leslie outstanding at right back. The home forwards were a hard-working lot, without anything showy in their play, and they kept the Celtic half-backs fully occupied. Thomson and Beattie were a little ahead of their colleagues.

With Boyle at left back, Celtic were not so effective in defence as usual, and as a line the half-backs were behind the Kilmarnock 's middle men, Lyon being the best of the three. McGrory was well held by McClure, and most of the Celtic raiding was done on the right, especially in the second half, when Delaney showed flashes of his best form, and with Buchan formed the visitors' best wing.

After a goalless first half, in which Kilmarnock held an attacking advantage, but failed to pierce the Celtic defence, the opening goal fell to the home side six minutes after the interval. Ross sent the ball into the goalmouth, and McGowan shot past Kennaway. For a spell after that it was all Celtic, and it was no surprise when Buchan equalised after seventeen minutes play.

A stern struggle ensued for the winning goal, and after twenty-nine minutes Kilmarnock got the decider from a penalty kick. With Kennaway out of his goal, Beattie shot and Lyon touched the ball past the post with his hand. Leslie converted the resultant penalty kick.
