Trivia
- Newly promoted Cowdenbeath give a good account of themselves, wingers Dick Boag and John Watters doing good build-up work, which their inside-left Willie Reid and centre McDougall did not take full advantage of. This tight match saw Celtic's young Paisley-born outside-left John Kelly makes his debut and goals from Matt Lynch and Johnny Crum were just enough to take the points though inside-right Milne pulled one back for Cowdenbeath at the death.
- The English football season opened with 600,000 watching the games in four divisions. Everton the champions dropped a point at home to Brentford.
- Workmen are busy preparing the country for war with emergency air-raid facilities and as from Saturday the Royal Navy has taken control over all merchant shipping.

CELTIC HARD PRESSED
About 12,000 spectators attended the match between Cowdenbeath and Celtic at Cowdenbeath. The Celtic won but were on the whole fortunate to do so, Cowdenbeath having more of the play, particularly in the first half, and being just as clever.
Neither side shot well, though both goalkeepers at times saved smartly, and Cowdenbeath were the greater culprits in this respect.
Early in the match clever work on the wings created openings for the inside men that were not accepted, McDougall being slow at centre. Milne made the best attempt to score a shot from the right wing hitting the crossbar.
On another occasion Cowdenbeath seemed likely to take the lead, but, after a good movement had completely opened up the Celtic defence and Watters was racing in with only the goalkeeper to beat, he was ruthlessly brought down from behind on the fringe of the penalty area.
At the interval there was no scoring, but early in the second half Crum put Celtic ahead after good combination with Divers.
In twenty-five minutes Lynch added a second goal with a dropping shot that was badly misjudged by Hill, and three minutes from the end Milne scored for Cowdenbeath.
